About — 01

Coaching with energy, built on twenty-one years.

I'm a Team USA competitor with four US Nationals appearances, and I trained at the World Arena in Colorado Springs under Olympic coach Tom Zakrajsek. Fifteen years on the show stage — Royal Caribbean, Bietak Productions, and Ice Theatre of New York. Now I coach full-time in Dallas-Fort Worth. The pedigree is there, but what skaters and parents actually talk about is the energy I bring to every lesson.

I'm a figure skating and power skating coach in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, based at the Children's Health StarCenter in Farmers Branch. I've spent more than two decades on the ice: first as a competitive skater representing the US at four National Championships — training at the World Arena in Colorado Springs alongside Olympic and Team USA coaches, choreographers, and athletes — then for fifteen years as a professional show skater with Royal Caribbean, Bietak Productions, and Ice Theatre of New York, where I was known for my backflips and high-energy style. I also hold a degree in acting, which shapes how I teach performance, musical interpretation, and presence on the ice.

Here's what people tell me first about working with me: I'm a really enthusiastic coach. I love this sport, and after all these years I still get genuinely excited every time a skater nails an edge they've been chasing or lands a jump for the first time. That energy is contagious, and it's the reason my students show up wanting to work hard.

Every lesson is built around the skater in front of me, not a template. Athlete first, always. Strong technical foundations come from the inside out (edges, posture, rotation, breath), and so do the life values that come with the sport: perseverance, discipline, sportsmanship, passion. Whether you're chasing your first one-foot glide or your double axel, the goal is the same: help you carve your own path, and have a lot of fun doing it.

Track record

From New York's show stage to Florida's rinks to private coaching in DFW.

My path on the ice covers a lot of ground: Team USA competitive development at Senior level, training at the World Arena in Colorado Springs; fifteen years performing professionally with Royal Caribbean, Bietak Productions, and Ice Theatre of New York; a coaching chapter across figure skating, hockey, and synchro in Florida; and now private coaching across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Every chapter shows up in the way I coach today: a show skater's eye for performance and choreography, a director's structure for test-track development, and a competitor's instinct for technical fundamentals.

Testimonials — 06

"Sam works with all three of my kids, one figure skater and two in hockey. They've absolutely blossomed on and off the ice. He's so positive with them they can't wait for their next lesson."

— Parent of three skaters

"Sam's energy is contagious. My daughter used to dread practice on tough days. Now she runs onto the ice because she knows Coach Sam will be hyped to see her, no matter what. He celebrates every small win like it's Nationals."

— Parent · figure skater, age 9

"What sets him apart is that the lesson is always about the athlete, not the coach's ego or some cookie-cutter plan. He listens, he adjusts, and he genuinely loves what he does. You can feel it in the first five minutes."

Questions — 08

Frequently asked.

Do I need my own skates to start figure skating lessons in Dallas?
Rentals are available at the Farmers Branch StarCenter front desk for your first lessons. For ongoing private figure skating instruction I recommend buying your own pair within a few weeks. Fit becomes important once you start working on edges and jumps.
How old does my child need to be for figure skating lessons in DFW?
I take private skaters from age 4 and up. For very young beginners, the StarCenter's Ice Explorers and Snowplow Sam group programs are usually the best starting point, then private lessons once they're comfortable on skates.
Is the ice time included in the lesson fee?
No, that's billed separately. You'll buy a freestyle or public session pass directly at the StarCenter (typically $15–25). My lesson fee is paid directly to me.
How often should I take lessons to make real progress?
For real progress, once or twice a week, plus practice time between lessons. We'll figure out the right rhythm in your first session based on your goals and schedule.
Do you coach competitive figure skaters in the Dallas area?
Yes. Free Skate, Moves in the Field, choreography for showcase and competition. With four trips to US Nationals as a competitor and twenty-one years coaching, the competitive track is something I love.
What's the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours in advance for no charge. Inside 24 hours, the lesson is charged in full unless it's a genuine emergency. Weather cancellations (rink closure) are always reschedule-only.
How do payments work?
For single lessons you're never charged until I approve your request — you'll get a payment link by email and can pay by card, or fee-free by Zelle or Venmo. Weekly packages are billed weekly through Stripe and can be paused or canceled anytime. Ice time is paid separately at the rink.
What should I wear and bring to a first lesson?
Warm, flexible layers you can move in — leggings or athletic pants, a fitted top, gloves, and socks. Bring your skates if you have them; if not, rentals are at the front desk. Tie long hair back. That's it — just come ready to move.
What's the difference between private lessons and the StarCenter's Learn to Skate classes?
Learn to Skate is a group class run by the rink — a great first taste of the ice. Private lessons with me are one-on-one, built around your specific goals, and progress much faster. Plenty of skaters do both: group class for extra ice time, private lessons to level up.

Don't wait. Get on the ice.

Whether it's a first lesson or competitive prep, the next step is the same. Let's talk.
